A Big Part of Lake Ontario Is Up for Sale Thanks to an Old Agreement
Normally, you can’t buy parts of Canadian lakes, but there’s a special case in Lake Ontario. Having a beautiful spot on Lake Ontario is a dream for many people. But what if you could own the water itself? It might sound like a dream that can’t come true, because Canadian lakes are usually owned by the government. Frenchman’s Bay, a 133-acre area on Lake Ontario’s coast near Scarborough’s Rouge Beach, is now on sale. This is a one-of-a-kind offering in the market.
The listing includes not just the bay but also 34 acres of Lake Ontario, and a banquet facility on Liverpool Road. The sellers, known as the Pickering Harbour Company, are asking for $60 million. The listing agent, Jim Kelly, calls it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” This is the first time in 170 years that the bay is changing ownership. This unusual opportunity traces its roots back to Queen Victoria of England, who granted the Pickering Harbour Company ownership of Frenchman’s Bay in 1853, long before Canada became a country.
What’s even more surprising is that these water areas are zoned for residential use, which means developers can come in and build floating homes.
Jim Kelly mentioned, “In places like Rotterdam and Amsterdam, luxury floating homes are a big thing. You can have a high-end, 1,500-square-foot, two-story home with a rooftop deck and your own boat dock.” Examples like Dubai’s Palm Islands and The World Islands show how people are drawn to waterfront developments. Friday Harbour Resort on Lake Simcoe, closer to home, is another example of a similar concept.
Additionally, the neighboring property at 591 Liverpool Road is also for sale. It’s a commercial area with a marina service, asking for $20 million. Kelly has received a lot of interest in these properties, both locally and internationally, but no deals have been confirmed yet.
Whoever buys these lands should carefully consider how to make the best use of the space. It’s a unique opportunity to add value to Pickering, whether it’s through building a parking garage, recreational facilities, a concert venue, or new homes. The goal is to turn it into an international tourist attraction.
Marina del Rey in California serves as inspiration. It’s a popular tourist spot with lots of water activities. Developing the Pickering waterfront could be similar in scale, and it has the advantage of being private property. The possibilities are endless, limited only by imagination. By opening up this space, it could become a fantastic bay for citizens, not only in Pickering but all over the world. There’s no reason why we can’t do it.
